The Cultural Affairs Program (CAP) was established in 1995 to promote and preserve the cultural traditions of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. The program’s mission is to strengthen cultural knowledge among the Choctaw people and to increase public awareness of the tribe’s history and culture.

The mission of the Choctaw Tribal Language Program is to increase the language’s value, use and fluency among Mississippi Choctaw speakers and learners. A majority of these efforts are geared toward children and their families in order to promote intergenerational transmission. Choctaw Tribal Language Program advocates for the language by increasing its visibility through translations, friendly animal characters, and by providing Choctaw language learning resources in all MBCI Tribal settings, including schools, government agencies, community centers, and in the home.

Services Provided

• Translation requests from community members
• Translation requests from MBCI and non-MBCI government entities for community health protocols to tribal wide informational flyers.
• Development of a Mississippi Choctaw Dictionary, & language documentation through video recordings & transcriptions.
• Development and creation of language learning resources & materials for community members, Tribal programs, and Choctaw Tribal Schools including storybooks, on-line learning activities on Memrise.com and hosting a plethora of materials for teaching on Google Drive.
• Visibility activities through various media outlets including Choctaw Community News, Choctaw Video Productions, the Choctaw Cultural Heritage website and other platforms.
• Training for MBCI staff who teach the Choctaw language including Choctaw Tribal Schools, Division of Early Childhood Education, and the Boys & Girls Club.
• On-site language events and presentations such as storytelling, short skits, mini language lessons, and language history.

The Special Projects/Media Program was established by the Department of Chahta Immi to provide cultural educational multi-media services to MBCI tribal programs, tribal schools, community organizations, and tribal members, and the general public.

The Program’s mission and services is to promote the living cultural traditions of the Mississippi Choctaws through technology.

The Program provides media resources, cultural presentations, technical support services and trainings to the tribal communities.

• The gift shop serves as a retail outlet for Choctaw Artisans.
• Assist Choctaw Artisans to develop artwork for original designs for items in retail.
